Feminism: Why should women trust the Canadian government?

While I was researching for my blog, I decided to go into YouTube and type in women in poverty, and found this video interesting...

I think the most powerful thing about this video would have to be the last few words that Penny Priddy from the NDP who was originally a politician from British Columbia but then moved and served in several cabinet posts including Women's Equality, Tourism and Culture, Health, Labour and Children and Families in the NDP governments said which was "how can Canadian women trust this government?" Priddy includes statistics that show that there is a 16,000 difference between a man’s wage and a woman’s wage, and although now a day’s woman are moving up in the job field but why is there still such a enormous gap between pay? Why should men have the upper hand on earning more, while woman are capable of doing the same type of work that men do? With such big of gaps between men and woman how could Canadian women really trust the government if they are still in fact happening today. Canada is supposed to be looked upon as a free country where we have equal rights and freedom, but women are still getting mistreated

Woman are in most cases the caregivers for the families, while the men are in most cases the “breadwinner” and brings home all the money to the family. While times are changing, woman and men don’t always last in the relationship but still have a child between the two of them. Often enough the woman takes custody of the child, leaving them with the financial support that needs to be given to the child, and always the emotional support that obviously plays a key role in parenthood. According to the text “The Family Dynamic” unattached women and women in lone-parent families are more likely to remain poor for an extended time. (Moriessette & Picot, 2005; Senate of Canada, 2009; Townson, 2009; The Family Dynamic, 2011 pg 354). Personally the most disturbing part of that information is that woman are remaining poor, they aren’t getting a chance to get out of poverty.

With that being said, society is always been based on a "man's world" and my question is when will it be socially acceptable for it to be an equal world? Both men and women. With the roles, and new changes happening in the world everyday and although I do believe that society is trying to change towards women, I don't believe that its changing fast enough. No matter how much workers and employers want to believe that they aren't being sexist towards women when trying to get a job, I feel that its always still in the back of the (usually men) bosses that men over-power women in a work force.

While searching on Youtube I found other videos on Feminism, and one was Jake Layton speaking out on feminism aswell. After watching the video above, with all due respect to Jake Layton, I'd like your opinions on which video you personally think is more benefical for feminism and makes more of an impact to the government. (I'll post it right after this blog, and feel free to make comments on which ever blog)

  1. I totally agree with you. It is really unfortunate that more is not being done to alleviate the gap between men and women. Quoting that same textbook, it says that single-parent female-headed families are hit the hardest with poverty, and that children are the largest group of people living in poverty (Ward, 2006, p.354). So this means the evidence is in, we know there's a problem, but it still is not being addressed. It would be very beneficial to society in general if a policy was put in place to break the cycle. Good post.

  2. Exactly, I feel that Canada does recognize problems and feel sympathy towards people in need but they don't do as much as is needed. I think that Canada needs to take a stand, and in this video the most disturbing part would be that women have to question their trust in the government. Not by being an individual because I know everyone has their own opinions but as a gender women can’t trust in the government.
