Marxism in the Welfare State

In the Marxist Paradigm it is believed that no matter what class you come from, every human being should have an equal chance at making a standard living in life. I think that this is something that can be done. It could never possibly go the extent that doctors would be making the same amount as janitors, but there are other ways that we can give lower class people the chance to achieve what they want in life.

Marxist adhere to the three central values of socialism: liberty, equality and fraternity. Liberty, to the Marxism can only exist if certain other conditions are present in society. Without a substantial degree of economic security and equality, freedom is an illusory concept. Without these conditions some people will have more resources than others.  (Mullaly, 2007)

Not everybody comes from a privileged background and for those who don’t, they probably have never seen anyone in their family go to post secondary school and live that dream that is reachable. “ Marxist believe that by focusing on the victims of inequality, oppression, alien-actions, and calling them criminals, drug addicts or poor people, we are actually labeling them as trouble makers” (Mullaly, 2007) With this being said if you were to have these labels why would you want to achieve better? You are already known as something in your society.

The welfare state doesn’t even provide enough for someone to live with the main essentials. In this case if you cannot provide the core needs of your family then how are you going to get any post secondary school, to achieve higher in your life? The welfare state really just wants you to take the first job that gives you an income so they can stop providing an income for you. This doesn’t help a lower class person at all because as soon as they decide that the job there at isn’t for them they quit and go right back on welfare.

Instead of the welfare state continually getting more and more people on social assistance, they should make a program that gives people the chance to go to school and get a higher education, to become the person they would like to be. I do understand that there are some subsidized programs that do this for people, but you usually have to fall under a certain criteria to be in them. Once again, this is not giving people an equal chance.

I believe that Marxism is beneficial to the lower class society because people would be given an equal chance and it will improve the lives of not only the lower class society but people living with disabilities as well.

  1. It's a good piece of writing Sylvia that you did a critical analysis on how the Marxist are right on their criticism of Social Welfare that encourages people to stop their job, does not empower them through education, and go to welfare which in itself not sufficient to sustain the life. That is the reason why the Marxist want to abolish the system of Capitalism itself in order to make the social program more effective and targeted to the concerned group.
But still we need the the state support.

  2. I really liked you post, it was very easy to read!
Its really sad that the welfare state doesn't even provide you with enough to get the bare minimum.
There's pretty much no way for people to get on top when no ones really willing to help them make the first steps.
I agree with you that there should be more programs and stuff to help people.

  3. Thank you, the government is clearly not doing enough and if there was more programs for people to do, i think there would be less crimes.
